New Orleans vs Los Angeles Lakers Prediction & Odds:
Free NBA Betting Insights for 4/4/25
At home, they’ve been dominant—24-7—and they already steamrolled New Orleans 136-115 back on March 4 in a game that was over by the third quarter. On the flip side, the Pelicans are a team in transition—or more accurately, stuck in transition. Zion Williamson remains their best player and brightest hope, capable of bulldozing his way to 30+ points on any given night, as he did in that March game against the Lakers (dropping 37). But around him, the wheels have fallen off. Injuries have been relentless, rotations inconsistent, and the supporting cast—once a promising collection of young pieces—has regressed or disappeared entirely. Their road performance this season has been brutal, with a 9-22 record against the spread, and their defense has frequently collapsed under even moderate pressure. That’s a disaster waiting to happen against a Laker team with two of the smartest offensive players in the league. For New Orleans to have any chance, they’ll need to turn this into a track meet, force turnovers, and hope their threes fall early and often. The Lakers, conversely, will be happy to play at their own methodical pace, exploiting mismatches in isolation and forcing the Pelicans to defend every inch of the court. The Lakers’ recent defensive trend—holding Western Conference opponents under the total in six straight games—also bodes well against a team like New Orleans, which struggles to score when Zion gets bottled up. In all likelihood, this game will reflect the season-long trajectories of both teams: Los Angeles rising, and New Orleans rebooting. For the Lakers, it’s business. For the Pelicans, it’s an exit interview.

New Orleans Pelicans NBA Preview
The New Orleans Pelicans travel to Los Angeles on April 4 to take on the Lakers, bringing with them a 21-54 record that tells a tale of missed potential, shattered rotations, and relentless setbacks. It has been a season of turbulence in the Big Easy—one that started with optimism around Zion Williamson’s health and ended with fingers crossed just to survive 48 minutes without another name added to the injury report. The Pelicans are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, and now their only role is that of spoiler—an uncomfortable role for a team that just two seasons ago looked like an ascending Western Conference threat. Against the Lakers, they’ll have to battle not only an elite opponent but also their own inconsistencies and injury-depleted identity. Zion Williamson remains the Pelicans’ brightest light in an otherwise murky season. When healthy—and that caveat is doing a lot of work—he has continued to put up All-Star caliber numbers, including a 37-point performance in the previous meeting against L.A. on March 4. His ability to bulldoze into the paint and finish through contact remains nearly unmatched in the NBA. But the problem is, Zion often looks like a solo act. With Brandon Ingram and other key contributors missing time due to injury, and a supporting cast that’s struggled to fill the void, defenses can collapse on Zion with little consequence. It has rendered much of the Pelicans’ offense predictable, despite flashes from younger players and role guys trying to prove they belong in future plans. Offensively, New Orleans averages about 111 points per game—which sounds acceptable until you realize they give up nearly the same amount on the other end.
Their biggest issue has been perimeter defense and transition containment. When their communication falters, they’re prone to giving up massive scoring runs, especially against disciplined, star-laden offenses like the Lakers’. New Orleans also ranks poorly in road performance, both straight-up and against the spread, with a bleak 9-22 ATS road record on the season. They’ve often looked overwhelmed when playing in hostile environments, and Crypto.com Arena isn’t exactly a forgiving venue when the Lakers start clicking. That said, the Pelicans do have some young bright spots worth keeping an eye on. Trey Murphy III has emerged as a capable floor spacer and defender, and rookie Jordan Hawkins has shown enough promise to be considered part of the long-term core. But experience is lacking, and late-game execution has been a recurring Achilles’ heel for this squad. Whether it’s turnovers, missed rotations, or stagnant offense, New Orleans has too often unraveled in the final minutes of winnable games. So, while this matchup against the Lakers may seem lopsided, it offers something critical for the Pelicans: evaluation. Every possession is a chance to gauge development, test rotations, and build toward something more stable next season. They may not have much to play for in the standings, but pride, film, and future contracts are still very much on the line. Against a championship-minded Lakers squad, even keeping it close would feel like a moral win—and that’s about all New Orleans has left to chase.

Los Angeles Lakers Lakers NBA Preview
The Los Angeles Lakers welcome the New Orleans Pelicans to Crypto.com Arena on April 4 with one goal in mind: don’t take your foot off the gas. Sitting at 46-29, the Lakers are entrenched in the Western Conference playoff race, jockeying for position in a conference where two straight losses can drop you into play-in territory. But the Lakers aren’t playing like a team sweating for survival—they’re playing like a team that believes they have unfinished business. After battling through early season injuries and roster growing pains, they’ve found their rhythm, and that rhythm is dangerous. With just a few games left on the calendar, every one is a chance to tighten rotations, assert dominance, and stack wins. Hosting a team like New Orleans, who’s limping toward the finish line, should be an opportunity to do all three. The big storyline for L.A. this season has been the pairing of Luka Dončić and LeBron James. It’s the basketball equivalent of time travel—a generational future Hall of Famer teaming up with the man who still seems to exist outside of time itself. Dončić has seamlessly integrated into the Lakers’ system, averaging high-20s in points while also serving as a creative force for the entire offense. His chemistry with LeBron has been better than most expected, with both players willing to share the spotlight and let the offense flow organically.
And when the flow stalls, they’re both capable of creating late in the clock. Throw in Anthony Davis, who when healthy still defends like a one-man wall, and you’ve got a legitimate Big Three operating at a very high level. The role players have been no less important. Austin Reaves has become a fan favorite and legitimate two-way contributor. D’Angelo Russell, when not moonlighting as a hot-and-cold meme generator, can space the floor and handle secondary playmaking duties. Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Jarred Vanderbilt all give the Lakers defensive versatility and hustle, especially when rotations tighten down the stretch. Coach Darvin Ham has finally established consistency in lineups, which has helped the Lakers gel on both ends of the court. Their defensive effort has ticked up significantly post-All-Star break, and the result has been a steady string of wins against teams they should beat—something L.A. wasn’t reliably doing earlier in the season. The Lakers are a lethal home team. They’re 24-7 at Crypto.com Arena and have recently dominated opponents there, including a 136-115 dismantling of this same Pelicans squad on March 4. They know how to feed off the crowd, they don’t panic when opponents go on a run, and they rarely let bad possessions snowball. Against the Pelicans—who struggle on the road and often bleed points early—L.A. has every reason to expect a strong showing. They’ll look to impose their will from tipoff and get the stars some rest by the fourth quarter. This isn’t a trap game for the Lakers—it’s a measuring stick. If they come out focused, disciplined, and motivated, it should be another routine win on the march to what they hope is a long postseason run.
