The UCLA Bruins and Penn State Nittany Lions will square off in a key Week 6 matchup at Beaver Stadium. UCLA comes into this game with a 1-3 record, having struggled in nearly every aspect. The Bruins’ offense, led by quarterback Ethan Garbers, has been inefficient, averaging just 14.8 points per game. Garbers has thrown for 808 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions. UCLA’s inability to generate points has put a significant strain on their defense, which has been forced to spend a lot of time on the field. The running game, led by T.J. Harden, has been ineffective, averaging only 58.8 yards per game, ranking 128th nationally.
Penn State, on the other hand, has looked like a potential College Football Playoff contender. The Nittany Lions are 4-0, and quarterback Drew Allar has been leading a balanced attack, throwing for 864 yards and eight touchdowns. Penn State’s rushing attack, powered by Nicholas Singleton, has been the focal point of their offense, averaging 254 rushing yards per game. Singleton has 408 rushing yards on the season, averaging seven yards per carry. Defensively, Penn State has been one of the top units in the nation, allowing just 11.5 points per game. Their ability to shut down opposing offenses and create turnovers has been key to their undefeated start. The key to this game will be whether UCLA’s offense can find any rhythm against Penn State’s stout defense. If Garbers and the Bruins continue to struggle with turnovers, it could be a long day for the UCLA offense. Conversely, if Penn State can establish its run game early, they should be able to control the tempo and dominate the game from start to finish.

The UCLA Bruins have had a disappointing start to the 2024 season, currently sitting at 1-3. Their offense has been ineffective, averaging only 14.8 points per game. Quarterback Ethan Garbers has thrown six interceptions to just three touchdowns, and the Bruins’ running game has been almost non-existent, ranking 128th nationally with only 58.8 rushing yards per game. T.J. Harden has led the team in rushing, but with just 125 yards through four games, UCLA’s offensive line has struggled to open up lanes for him. Defensively, UCLA has been inconsistent. They are allowing 30.8 points per game, and their secondary has been exposed, giving up nearly 291 passing yards per game. Against Penn State, the Bruins will need to find a way to stop the run and force Drew Allar into making mistakes. If they can’t limit Penn State’s offensive production, the game could get out of hand quickly.

The Penn State Nittany Lions enter this game undefeated at 4-0 and ranked seventh nationally. Their success has been built on a powerful running game and a suffocating defense. Drew Allar has been an efficient passer, completing over 65% of his throws for 864 yards and eight touchdowns with only one interception. The real star, however, has been the ground game, led by Nicholas Singleton, who has amassed 408 rushing yards and three touchdowns while averaging seven yards per carry. Defensively, the Nittany Lions have been dominant, ranking sixth nationally by allowing just 11.5 points per game. They have been excellent against the run, giving up only 78.5 rushing yards per contest, and their secondary has been equally formidable, holding opponents to a 48.4% completion rate and just 154.5 passing yards per game. If Penn State can shut down UCLA’s limited offense and control the time of possession, they should have no problem covering the spread and remaining unbeaten.
